INSIDE THE MONITOR - VIDEO ARTISTS CLOSE UP
Lecture and discussion / Thursday, March 15, at 2pm / Auditorium of the Kunstmuseum Bonn

Jappy, an enormous mouse-like plush figure is the protagonist in the video by the art-collective ANTENNE: in ADVENT OF JAPPY homage is paid to Jappy with scurrilous, quasi-religious rites. During a VIDEONALE-Conversation with KATJA STUKE and OLIVER SIEBER, ANTENNA provide insights into their work, their sources of inspiration and their references to traditions, popular culture and social criticism.

Besides ANTENNA, other artists taking part in VIDEONALE 11 present themselves and their works. Among them are the German and Austrian artists JEANNNE FAUST, J?RN ZEHE, ULU BRAUN and ROLAND SEIDEL who provide deeper insight into their creative activities.

In their REKORDER project, BRAUN and SEIDEL use the creative process itself as a theme. The Performance-Video will act as the basis of a discussion dealing with the relationship between artistic concepts and the way they can be implemented using the New Media. In the film itself, the documentation of its production was included as an additional layer of the plot.

A special programme of Korean artists, presented in the Communication Centre by curator Hyunjin Kim, complements the numerous exhibits of the VIDEONALE.

STOLEN OR BORROWED - COPYRIGHT IN VIDEO ART
Lecture and discussion / Friday, March 16 at 2am / Auditorium of the Kunstmuseum Bonn

What on earth is Robert de Niro doing in Douglas Gordon's work THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS? Gordon takes the famous ?Mirror Scene? from Martin Scorsese's Film TAXI DRIVER and uses this as the core of his own work of art. Theft, plagiarism, or just simply genial - the question of copyright is and remains an obscure business in the field of media art.

?Found Footage? is the magic formula with which video artists have so far successfully managed to work their way out of legal pitfalls. They take advantage of existing pictorial materials - films, newsreels or home videos - and use them for their own purposes. Principles of copyright, questions of personal rights, rights to the visual, and legal aspects of adaptation often remain unsolved.

During VIDEONALE 11, experts will use actual cases to explain the current legal situation. The media lawyer AMA WALTON, Munich, will handle the relevant legal problems relating to video art. Gallery owner ANITA BECKERS, Frankfurt, discusses legal aspects which crop up during her cooperation with artists and the sale of video art to collectors. DR. ANKE SCHIERHOLZ, in-house lawyer of VG Bildkunst Bonn, deals with the role of exploitation companies in the field of video art, while ANETTE G?DDE describes this theme from the point of view of the artist.

VIDEO IN THE MUSEUM - EXHIBITION ARCHITECTURE FOR VIDEO ART
Lecture and discussion / Saturday, March 17 at 4pm / Auditorium of the Kunstmuseum Bonn

Tones overlay one another, jam one another - presenting video art in a classical museum environment, intended only to display painting and sculpture, is a frequent source of dissatisfaction for both artists and the public. Alternatives to the "black box", which is rejected by many visitors are much sought-after.

What successful exhibition architecture for video art can look like is the subject of today's expert discussion. MUNA SAWAS (one of the three-headed design team, together with FRANK LEUWER und ANKE ROHLFING) and JOCHEN SPECHT, the architects of VIDEONALE 10 and 11, present their own architecture, planned specifically for exhibiting video art. In their design they attempt to retain open space and so avoid the "black box" feeling. STEFAN EBERSTADT presents his designs for the new Videolounge in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, which is marked by its architectural character. GEORG ELBEN, curator of VIDEONALE 11, talks about what he personally expects from exhibition architecture. The discussion will be moderated by ANDREAS DENK, editor-in-chief of the magazine DER ARCHITEKT published by the BDA.
