Asterión
In this video, the viewer is invited to an unusual rodeo performance: a man in a black business suit and carrying a briefcase rides a white steer at night. Holding tight with one hand, he tries to keep his balance so that he will not be thrown. The seriousness and normality of the business world signalled by the suit is shattered by being transposed to the rambunctious and risky pastime of the rodeo. A muted, almost atmospheric undertone is lent to the wild, energetic movements of the animal through the slow motion; the lonely, dark environment; and the minimal yet powerful sounds. The scene reaches its apex when the briefcase opens up and papers float out of it like feathers. On the one hand, their weightlessness stands in contrast to the exertion by the rider and the steer, but, on the other, they have a counterpart in the slow-motion, almost dance-like balancing act. The power struggle ends as the rider deftly jumps off. In Asterión, Lebrija refers to the mechanisms of the working world and raises the question of whether the supposedly self-determined person can control the way the world goes or if he will be steered by its wild, unpredictable movements, and if he can live up to the unforeseeable demands of a world moving at an increasingly rapid pace.
